Selected Publications of Iona Miller: https://ionamiller2020.weebly.com/selected-articles.html Picture “Character forces me to encounter each event in my peculiar style. It forces me to differ. I walk through life oddly. No one else walks as I do, and this is my courage, my dignity, my integrity, my morality, and my ruin.” --James Hillman, The Force of Character Art draws the viewer into its participatory space. Images and symbols are visible in the psychic aspect of symptoms and behavior. The reader can be involved in a self-disclosing collaborative process mapping the conceptual terrain, including our response to the spiritual uncertainties of our times. Our invisible ground is now simultaneous information that travels at the speed of light, centered everywhere and nowhere. Innate Image Iona is a Symbolist, mythographer, and visionary, perhaps more pragmatic and less literal than most with similar interests. Her writing is informed by Jungian, Post-Jungian, Archetypal, Personality, and Transpersonal psychologies, as well as philosophy and meditation. Jungian psychology strongly connects with the arts, culture and history of society, which also derive from the imagination. Writing is ordinary magic, natural magic. It can transport the reader to new territory, to 'foreign lands.'
Beyond Postmodernism "At the root of our compulsion to create art is the need to establish some calm point within life's turbulent flow." --Camille Paglia, "Sexual Personae" (Vintage). Early knowledge of these processes shaped her relationship to the world. She is interested in creativity, experiential therapy, extraordinary human experiences, using interpretive and non-interpretive strategies. Many of today's trends in self-exploration came from the therapeutic communities of the 1960s and perennial wisdom traditions. She is also interested in effects at the global level, unintended consequences, rather than intentions. Experiential therapies were developed and popularized in later decades, and now are mainstream, thanks to social media. This psychology without walls transcends the consulting room, explores the soul of the world -- the global agora. It deliberately connects with personal history, the arts, culture and history of society, which are also derived from the imagination. Its lessons can be applied by individuals to themselves, adding new depth to Self-help.
Her work is an omni-sensory fusion of depth psychology, personal mythology, meditation, dreamwork, science-art, frontier science, symbolism, philosophy, source mysticism, futuring, digital life, emergent healing, poetics, and paradigm shift. Her framework is semiotic (image-as-sign) and phenomenological (image-in-consciousness). Panpsychism is the philosophical view that consciousness, mind or soul (psyche) is a universal and primordial feature of all things. Primordial consciousness gives rise to potentialities, patterns and cycles which are realized as instances -- conscious experience. Mystics seek the Formless God or Inner Light. While the mystic seeks the frameless, non-conceptual, thoughtless experience of primordial awareness, the artist seeks every way to navigate mind, and explore its domains by reframing consciousness. In some languages the verb for 'paint' and 'write' is the same word. Both hand gestures initiate a flow state: When hand and eye play, awareness of self and object fuse in a new entity on the paper or screen. The inner organizing “urge to pattern and wholeness” differs from willed planning and is free to embody in the product of the process.
Aesthetic Approach This "know thyself" approach is through novel means of presentation, conservation, and curation in a holistic, participative, contextual and relational way. Inclusion is a strategic move out of reductive frames of reference. “'Know thyself,' means also 'know thy peculiar images.'” The intention is to promote directions of 'sensibility,' where each viewer can deploy their own narrative and approach to the material presented, blurring the logic of inside and outside, a tension between the universal and the particular, collective and individual. She articulates the curatorial as critical thought that does not rush to embody itself, but instead raises questions that are to be unraveled over time. There are lots of great stories out there, but not always history. Things tend to look different from inside than outside. Self-realization is a solitary journey, described by Plotinus: "The way to truth was the journey of a lonely person to that which is eternally alone." Her labyrinth of works is a free-floating conceptual framework. It is a spiritual, philosophical, and psychological practice.
In therapy we work with particular models. But an artist or philosopher can work purely symbolically. The creative impulse is brought to fruition in the world. Such secret forms grow into our life's work and purpose. By communing deeply with the outside world we find the familiar in the unfamiliar. Works with a trans- quality go beyond mundane time, space, logic and personal taste or aesthetic preference. They connect with our essential Being at the core, reflected in nature and art, piercing time to find eternity. Transcending content, they open a new dimension...an invisible initiatory dimension. From here the artist gives birth to the secret space of the image itself which comes alive by giving shape to that secret. In Iona's work, there is an underlying thread of digging in deep, connectivity and personal spirituality, based on contact with the numinous. Novel, transpersonal, uncanny, and highly personal appearances create a specific quality of sacredness that grips the soul with particular states (awe, dread, stupor, wonder, healing, reverence, astonishment, etc.). This contact is the essence of the guiding process -- an act of grace and profound symbolic experience. A certain brightness in the soul transcends our own personal suffering. When we rediscover it, it turns suffering into meaning.
A temporary loss of personal identity is natural when consciousness expands into transpersonal Reality, into non-conceptual Mystery. “The main interest of my work,” writes Jung, “is not concerned with the treatment of neurosis but rather with the approach to the numinous. But the fact is that the approach to the numinous is the real therapy and inasmuch as you attain to the numinous experiences, you are released from the curse of pathology." (vonFranz, Marie-Louise, Psychotherapy, Shambahla Publications, 1990, p.177.) Picture Imaginal Art My Body of Images http://ionamiller2017.weebly.com/io-art.html "Art as an anti-environment is an indispensable means of perception, for environments, as such, are imperceptible.
Their power to impose their ground rules on our perceptual life is so complete that there is no scope for dialogue or interface. Hence the need for art or anti-environments." --McLuhan, (UB 20, pp.3-4) “Non-objective art draws its contents essentially from “inside.” This “inside” cannot correspond to consciousness, since consciousness contains images of objects as they are generally seen, and whose appearance must therefore necessarily conform to general expectations…. Behind consciousness there lies not the absolute void but the unconscious psyche, which affects consciousness from behind and from inside, just as much as the outer world affects it from in front and from outside.” ~Carl Jung, CW 15, P. 206 Soul (anima) is an active intelligence that forms or plots our fates. Being-in-Anima (esse in anima) is to be ensouled. Soma Sophia, the Body of Wisdom is inherent dwelling within the body of Anima Mundi. Psyche is immersed in imagination, metaphor, poetry and myth, including scientific and spiritual technologies.
Fantasy deliteralizes the illusory concreteness of matter. Images and fantasy are the carriers of meaning. The language of alchemy provides archetypes for the world as it is phenomenologically constructed. Inspiration replenishes the world, the wasteland of the nigredo. Aesthetic Arrest Clarity is artistic discovery of the universal. There is enchantment in the quality of wholeness. There is beauty in the rhythms of nature and our nature. Aesthetic response is an essential emotional aspect of alchemy that lends flow and harmony to the process of balance, rhythm and synthesis of immediate perception. That flow is lyrical, epic and dramatic. Aesthetic signification is one thing, but the deep emotional impact of aesthetic arrest -- being suspended for a thrilling radiant moment in the eternal -- stops us in our tracks in a moment of realization. We dissolve in the mysterious ground of being, the sublime wellspring of creativity.
The mind goes still as primal awareness expands into wholeness. Something without physical form shines forth from the hidden world in that very moment. These luminous experiences, true works of art, drive us onward in the Quest. We are struck with divine inspiration and the passion to see it through to completion. Sensuous cognition of beauty is a revelation, an astonishment. Aesthetic arrest blows apart the illusory differences between the sacred and the profane. We are inspired in the A-ha moment, utterly dissolved in the momentary ego-death of its solutio that blows apart illusory nature. This aesthetic experience is an act of surrender that is an epiphany. It makes us gasp for air and sparks a cascade of pleasure. We are connected to beauty and wholeness. We know what it means to exist rooted in the mysterious creative ground of being. Soul is made by narrating events in terms of myth, the metaphoric and symbolic dimensions of our experience. Poetics brings the archetypal into participation with the mundane by tending the currents of life. The alchemist in us is an imaginative variation of our mundane character through which some of us come to recognize our life story. Our enlivened art speaks to our depths.
Alchemy is a direct way of knowing -- experience-based knowledge. SARCA Medal for Creative Physics in Science-Art, 2015 Picture Picture Picture

Pure objectivists assume they can stand naked in this world.
Pure subjectivists imagine that the world is their own clothing.
Pure empiricists are just ‘waiting for a good lesson,’
which the pure extrapolators are sure everybody will get.
Unlike the specialist who ‘keeps his eye on the ball’, or the non-specialist who ‘keeps his ear to the ground,’ we can do both by using all our faculties comprehensively. We savor the paradoxes of life with logical human maturity. We constantly take a ’second look’ at our own thinking to take into account its effects on this 'second sight.'
The Ancients already knew the therapeutic potential of the family links between generations that we rediscover in modern transgenerational analysis. Far from being a new fashion, the recognition of transgenerational processes dates back to the first shamanic type of communities. Their methods to cure "The Ancestor Syndrome" offer to contemporary therapies essential historical references and valuable teachings. Transgenerational integration brings a welcome middle ground for exchanges between traditional, shamanic and actual therapeutic approaches. This new field nourishes the rooting of contemporary practices as well as the renewal of ancestral wisdom. With the contribution of specialists from different backgrounds, this collective book presents a wide spectrum of perspectives to bridge traditional and modern knowledges.
In an increasingly fragmented world, there is a constant quest for religious expression that will at last enable the union of the material and the spiritual. The Millers here demonstrate that such an expression is to be found in a combination of alchemy and the psychological studies of C. G. Jung, himself no stranger to alchemical study. Using the stages of purification and refinement found in The Book of Lambsprinck , a 16th-century alchemical text, as well as in Jung's archetypes of consciousness and unconsciousness, the authors trace the development of the self from solitude to union. The great attraction of the book is its affirmation of the redemption of broken matter in the union of self and soul. Illustrations, reproduced from The Book of Lambsprinck , are beautifully rendered. The end result, in sum, is a vital text for all spiritual seekers.
The book does cover perfume, and is a valuable reference on perfumes in all their uses, BUT it is not only about perfume. This book is one of the best primers on Kabbalistic thought, the tree of life, and ritual magic that a beginner (or advanced) student could hope for. The first few chapters are a basic primer on kabbalistic theory that is seldom equaled in clarity and usefulness, including a very clear example of the Middle Pillar Exercise. The next chapters focus on perfume and incense blending, both for pleasing scents and for magical use. For the herbal students the middle of the book is the most rewarding. Every point or path on the tree of life is associated with a perfume/incense/scent. Each plant or animal source of that scent is discussed in detail, (including synthetic, cruelty free, alternatives to the traditional musk and other animal scents). This book even has the different music notes that correspond with each scent. This is not only perfect for making your own rituals, but for mixing oils, too, and making your own natural perfume.

MYTHIC STUDIES

Death. As mortals we long for those who have been separated from us by the veil of death. We venerate ancestors, known and unknown; we grieve for love ones lost; we ready ourselves for death, or fear it deeply as the ultimate unknown.
In Hellenic tradition, the god who rules beyond the veil is called many things. Most often, He is referred to as Hades, a name also given to His realm. He is a somber god, for the most part, one too aware of the responsibilities He bears. But He has a queen by His side to share the burden, His beloved Persephone; and a host of attendants, such as the Ferryman, the Lord of Dreams, the Lord of Sleep, Mother Night, and His great three-headed guard dog.
In this volume, you will find poems and short stories, essays and rites which honor the God Below, the Lord of Riches, the Bearer of the Helm of Invisibility. For to fail to honor Him, to fail to recognize His inescapability, is to court disaster; even madness. For there is no avoiding death, and someday we shall all find ourselves His subjects.
Xaire, Haides and your host of many! May our inevitable knowledge of you not come too swiftly, or be delayed overlong past when mercy is preferable.
Dæg. Sunne. Maponos. Saulė. Lugh. Helios. Surya. Ra. Taiowa. Belenus. The Sun Goddess of Arinna.Without the Sun, life as we know it would not exist. An obvious statement, perhaps, but the profound, primal truth of it is reflected in the spiritual traditions and mythologies of people from around the world. In many, the Sun is the first Deity or one of the first generation who oversees the creation of the world. Sometimes the Sun is the keeper of time and order, an all-seeing guardian of justice. In many tales, the Sun warms the world of both the living and the dead, traveling to the underworld each night. And, ultimately, the loss of the Sun means the end of life, even the death of the whole world. This devotional is only the beginning, a small glance at a much larger subject. The poems, prayers, hymns, rites, essays, short stories, and artwork included here only hint at the vastness of the Deities and mythology of the Sun. It is our hope that this anthology — created by devotees of Solar Deities from all over the world — will inspire others to create their own celebratory works.

MOTHER MYCELIUM
Kybele, Attis, & the Fruit of the Gods
Iona Miller, 2020
https://ionamiller2020.weebly.com/kybele-attis.html
As 'Mother of the Gods,' 'Mother of the Mountains,' and 'Mistress of Beasts,' Kybele is about the original fluid relationship between the constellation of all beings that gives rise to the voice before time even began.
Her mythic forest remains untrammeled, her animals both earthly and celestial (zodiac). She mediates between the boundaries of the known and unknown, the civilized and the wild, the worlds of the living and the dead. There is an Ecology of Souls. She is the primal consciousness that instructs all life how to live in the world and not just on it.
The primordial female figure is connected with the underworld, ancestors, and the power of the deceased. The archaic cult of Kybele, with its mania, frenzy, chaos, thrashing, shrieks, droning horns, screaming flutes, and cacophony drives altered states.
Her revels might be likened to the first primal scream therapy. We have maligned the forests, the species, and the life force of the planet. We need a perceptual rebirth. One that comes from the heart.
Paleolithic Kybele is a forest of symbolism -- the invisible made visible in psychic events, soul process, and revelatory meaning. Her rustic aesthetic is a field of immediacy, of encounter, organized within a distribution of the sensible, a more primitive form of rhythmic language than words. We can speak imagistically like dreams themselves.
We have a visceral connection to the vocal terrain through its utterance and through the wordless knowing of intuitive listening in space. Rolling on the ground screaming might be the beginning of the way.KYBELE: THE WILD FEMININE
A Wilderness of Soul
Iona Miller, (c)2020
https://ionamiller2020.weebly.com/cybele.html
Where do you stand? What is around and beneath you?
Is it solid ground or pavement; is it earthen or synthetic?
Is there magic in the land there? Is it powerful, wild, or tame?
Is its energy flowing through you? Does it effect your magic?
Soil is more than mere matter; it contains spirit -- the place where you live.
Can we recover the wild sacred?
“Deep inside us is a wilderness. We call it the unconscious because we can’t control it fully, so we can’t will to create what we want from it. The collective unconscious is a great wild region where we can get in touch with the source of life.” (C.G. Jung).
The earth is a nourishing vegetative soul, collected from the plants that germinate and grow from it. Animals are born from it, so consider the earth an enormous animal that also has intelligence and is thus a god? Why not say that the earth is a partial animal that belongs to the universal animal? Earth doesn't receive inaginal consistency from outside by virtue of a foreign soul but embodies its own soul -- Anima Mundi.
Dimensions of Character
Which metaphor do we use for the universe? Why?
Kosmos originally was an aesthetic idea of divine generation, the domain of each polytheistic god establishing the right placing of things, adorned in the beauty of an ordered arrangement. Our calling is to tend soul, relate with the numinous, and engage the autonomous image.
"When we do enter that forest, we enter the domain of the Wild Mother (i.e., the chthonic unconscious, the thoroughly chaotic and undifferentiated domain of Eros). We encounter both mythical beasts and domesticated animals, demons of every sort and description, and eventually the positive and negative aspects of sexuality. As we emerge from each encounter, we are impressed with the living reality of the archetypes -- entities in the depths of the psyche that seem not only to be alive and enduring, but also marked by something approaching consciousness."
Jung ’s “three essential aspects of the mother are: 1) her cherishing and nourishing goodness, 2) her orgiastic emotionality, and 3) her Stygian depths” (¶158). These are “paradoxical” aspects of the “loving and terrible mother.”
Kybele, a wildly sacred earth, expressed the conscious outlook of her age. She had ritual, acoustic, corporal, and dramaturgical form. When the goddess was a Queen Bee, honey was a sacred elixir.
Animals taught us what to eat, what was medicine, how to dig, weave, and hunt--how to clear a way through dark forests, the trepidation of the unknown. Humans learned from nature that stones roll downhill. Birds wove, probed and pounded.
We were taught by nature how it could be mastered. "Reconnecting to the animal means getting to a more sensitive, more artful and more humorous place in the psyche." (James Hillman, Thomas Moore (2013). “The Essential James Hillman: A Blue Fire”, p.295, Routledge)
We are claimed by myths and invite story into our lives as tributaries that lead us to the bigger river of nourishing essential truths. Their spirits walk with us through the gorges and steep cliffs on indigo nights of deep song. Devotion means a theological interpretation of myth, a philosophy of pagan religion with a pagan perspective.
To speak of today's revitalized psychic terrain meaningfully, we need a new vocabulary. Transliminality, "going beyond the threshold", is a psychological trait involving hypersensitivity to psychological material (including ideation, imagery, affect, and perception) originating in the unconscious or the external world.

The Breath of the Soul Is the Heart of the Matter By Iona ... Aphrodite's mystique is her sacred presence in the ordinary, inherent beauty apprehended as soul. Aphrodite is essentially psyche, or soul, expressed personally as anima and collectively as Anima Mundi, the Soul of the World. What appears to be outside of us ...In her common form, Aphrodite is anima -- soul or psyche; in her heavenly form, Aphrodite Urania is the Anima Mundi. The feminine principle or mode of Being is historically considered the "soul of the world," the fertility of human, animal and plant life. Renaissance philosopher Giordano Bruno said the World Soul “illumines the universe and directs nature in producing her species in the right way.” She is the magical world of creative mystery.

Polytheistic Psychology:
iMages
"So you want to learn about Archetypes."
by Iona Miller, ©2020
https://ionamiller2020.weebly.com/polytheism.html
Polytheistic myths can provide psychological insight. Archetypal psychology is an introduction to polytheism, Greek mythology, the soul-spirit distinction, anima mundi, psychopathology, soul-making, imagination, and therapeutic practice.
In psychological polytheism, the gods infuse personality, politics, economics, science, aesthetics, metaphysics, and other expressions of culture confirmed at an experiential and symbolic level. Hillman notes ..."[t]he plurality of archetypal forms reflects the pagan level of things and what might be called a polytheistic psychology."
This hybrid form rejects scientific materialism, its mechanical universe, and conventional devaluation of nature. It finds hierarchical structures of power distasteful. Hillman clarifies his approach: "In our metaphysics we declare our fantasies about the physical and its transcendence. A metaphysical statement can be seen as a psychological fancy about the relationship between 'matter and spirit'."
This Metamodern view is deconstructive, aesthetic, and Romantic. This radical pluralism of a polytheistic metapsychology theorizes about the structure of psychological theorizing itself. They share reconstruction, collaboration, interdisciplinary, transmedia work, generative paradox and ambiguity, simultaneity, and engagement rather than exhibitionism. Overlapping different identities only empowers all of them. Mystery, as living presence and the movement toward favoring the irrational, becomes 'my story.'
The psychological value and insights of polytheistic myth is a major theorem of archetypal psychology. Neopagan religions are usually polytheistic, nature-oriented, non dogmatic. They facilitate relationship and direct engagement with the Gods and Goddesses. Pagans, poets and artists use mythic characters and tropes to express contemporary metaphors and images found in every dream, drama, ceremony, gesture, and passionate act.

http://ionamillersubjects.weebly.com/paranoia-winter-2014.html
Group trainings and leadership programs have a long history, rooted in the dark soil of Tavistock Institute. “Change agents”, “transformation agents”, and “subject-matter experts” seed large groups with process-oriented change, presented as necessary reforms within bureaucracies to keep pace with the times. But they function as directional drivers of cultural change that transforms the paradigm, zeitgeist or worldview of the general population. No one can resist what they cannot detect. The result is a metaphorical “fracking” of your brain.

Emotional Alchemy: The Chemistry of Stress, Healing, and Transcendence
by Iona Miller, Asklepia Foundation, ©2001 https://ionamiller.weebly.com/emotional-alchemy.html
The natural cycle of ergotropic and trophotropic processes, governed by the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems mediates cycles of arousal and calm, and are therefore implicated in a variety of disorders which display states of hyperarousal and hypoarousal. They are mediated by the neurotransmiters noradrenalin and serotonin. The interhemispheric balancing mediates the harmonization of the left and right hemispheres of the brainmind. They mediate fight-flight-freeze responses, and pain-pleasure cycles. They can be chemically related to cycles of addiction and inflation, desire, acting out, guilt, remorse, high wellbeing, self-acceptance, and self-esteem. At their extremes, meditative and exalted states reflect as psychological and physiological paradox.
SPIRITUAL ALCHEMY, Iona Miller, Alchemists speak of retorts, furnaces, and chemicals, but are really talking about transformations taking place in their own bodies, minds, and souls. https://ionamiller.weebly.com/spiritual-alchemy.html "The secret of alchemy is this: there is a way of manipulating matter and energy so as to produce what modern scientists call a 'field of force.' The field acts on the observer and puts him in a priveleged position vis-a-vis the Universe. From this position he has access to the realities which are ordinarily hidden from us by time and space, matter and energy. This is what we call the Great Work." ~ Fulcanelli, 1937 http://spiritualalchemy.iwarp.com/

THE TRANSMODERN ALCHEMIST: Spiritual Technology, Chaos Theory & Dynamics in Personal Transformation http://transmodernalchemy.iwarp.com/ by Iona Miller, 2009 Physics for Alchemists; Can We Ever Discover the Fabric of Reality? "There is a generic process in nature and consciousness which dissolves and regenerates all forms. The essence of this transformative, morphological process is chaotic -- purposeful yet inherently unpredictable holistic repatterning. The Great Work of the art of alchemy is the creation of the Philosopher's Stone, a symbol of wholeness and integration. The liquid form of the Stone, called the Universal Solvent, dissolves all old forms like a rushing stream, and is the self-organizing matrix for the rebirth of new forms. It is thus a metaphor or model for the dynamic process of transformation, ego death and re-creation." (Miller, 1992, "Chaos As the Universal Solvent")
CHAOS NATURAE: Chaos, Complexity & Alchemical Process,
http://transmodernalchemy.iwarp.com/whats_new_3.html By Iona Miller, 2009 We are agents of chaos. The secrets of chaos are embodied and revealed in alchemy and chaos theory. Both are open-ended processes. The whole is contained in the part in reiterated patterns of nested structure. Chaos is the transformative energy. We have the capacity to transform utterly in any given instant of pure potential. Chaos is complete in itself, internally harmonious. Creation is a self-contained, organic process of development. Each flowing image brings a morphological epiphany, "I am that."
P300 Waves by Iona Miller, Asklepia Foundation, ©2001 http://chaosophy2001.iwarp.com/whats_new_3.html P300 MERMERS and PGO wave-generation: MERMERS indicate a psychological significance of the stimuli to the subject, whether that object is physical or imaginal. They help document psychological shifts in internal states during therapy which lead toward spontaneous healing. During dreams PGO activity is interpreted by the brain as sensory stimulation. Through self- organizing dynamics, coherent dream experiences emerge from the influence of apparently unpatterned PGO stimulation. When the dreaming brain is free of external sensory patterns of neural excitation, it is subject to even subtle influences. PGO waves provide perturbation that keeps the dream narrative in motion, and abrupt alterations in dream experiences.
The Fractal Nature of Active Sleep and Waking Dreams Restructuring Consciousness
through Metaphor, Fetal REM, and Neural Plasticityby Iona Miller and Graywolf Swinney, Asklepia Foundation, ©2001
http://chaosophy2001.iwarp.com/whats_new_1.html Abstract: The hypothesis of Harvard biopsychiatrist, C.M. Anderson (1998) provides some enticing substantiation for psychophysical restructuring in the CRP Journeys. His work is centered around the psychotropic and oneiric aspects of the shamanic entheogen iboga, used by the Bwiti tribe of Africa, and more recently employed therapeutically by Harold Lotsoff and Dr. Robert Goutarel for the elimination of chemical dependency and Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Drug-free shamanism shares many common features with this therapy: initiatory waking-dream journeys, shamanic guidance, quick life review, psychedelic states of consciousness, spontaneous fetal regression, journeys to “the land of the dead,” and the induction and facilitation of Self-organized Critical States (SOCs) which result in restructuring of fundamental neural patterns.
EXOTIC MATTER & ENERGY Vacuum Fluctuation in the Macro- and Microcosm (or, Surfing the Primordial Gravity Waves), Iona Miller, ©2000 http://chaosophy2001.iwarp.com/whats_new_6.html
In the beginning was the Void. Sound waves [the Word] originated in the first instant of the universe’s life, when the cosmos underwent an extraordinary expansion. No one really knows what drove it, but by stretching the very fabric of space, it magnified a weird subatomic phenomenon that is known today as the spontaneous materialization of particles from a complete vacuum. Vacuum fluctuation underlies both cosmology and quantum processes. Vacuum-spawned particles constantly flicker in and out of existence around us, arising from and sinking back into the void. During inflation, this process like everything else in the universe, was magnified tremendously. The rapidly expanding early universe imparted enough energy to these particle wannabes that instead of quickly subsiding into the vacuum, they remained in the real world. The sudden influx of countless particles from the vacuum was like a stone thrown into the dense particle pond of the early universe, sending out ripples--pressure waves. And pressure waves rippling through a gas are nothing more than sound waves. The entire universe rang like a bell.
